Vibroacoustic Harp TherapyTM (VAHT)

Kate Kunkel is a certified VAHT practitioner, trained by Sarajane Williams, the pioneer who developed the technique.  Sarajane expanded upon the work of Olav Skille and others doing Vibroacoustic Therapy.

Sarajane explains the process below, and you can also see a Video of Kate doing the therapy HERE.

Vibroacoustic Harp Therapy (VAHT) is performed by delivering amplified live harp music through a sound table, chair or pad.  It is often described as a musical massage.  When working with clients with chronic pain, a VAHT practitioner isolates specific tones that resonate in areas of tension and pain in the body, and emphasizes and integrates those pitches into improvised harp music.  Each client experiences the musical tones in different ways at different times; therefore the therapy is a very dynamic process and must be tailored to the unique individual.  Generally, higher pitches excite and lower pitches relax the body.  When the client is relaxed, abstract thinking slows and awareness expands.  Past memories (positive or negative) may be recalled, or re-experienced, or symbolized through imagery.  Those experiences may provide new awareness, positive reframing or integration of previously repressed material, and/or emotional catharsis. Most clients report deep relaxation, pain/tension relief, increased body awareness, and positive imagery.

Although VAHT is in its infancy, several pilot studies indicate its efficacy in reducing tension and pain by activating the relaxation response and entraining or synchronizing the diverse oscillatory systems of the body. VAHT also enhances emotional processing and positive imagery and can stimulate lymphatic circulation. Patients with conditions such as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, insomnia, tinnitus, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy have reported a decrease in symptoms after receiving 20 minutes of VAHT.
